Like most things in life you receive what you pay for. I will not say that
hiring the most expensive lawyer gives you the best
divorce, nor will I say that hiring an inexpensive lawyer for a
contested divorce leaves you with the worst agreement, but you never know until it is too late.
There are many, many excellent divorce lawyers in my County who without
a doubt know what to do and how to do it. However, they are all different
people and some may be better technically, others may have a warmer personality,
some are good talkers, some are good writers and some excel in the courtroom.
In my opinion, and I have been a lawyer for 35 years and a divorce lawyer
for 26 years, you should hire the most knowledgeable attorney that you
can afford and with whom you can place your trust. If the lawyer knows
his stuff and can communicate clearly to you, your case has a good chance
of proceeding smoothly with a
negotiated agreement as the end result. If your spouse has hired a gorilla who just pounds
his chest but doesn't do the real work, it will take longer to get
done. If your spouse hires someone who is just learning about divorce
law, your case will take longer.
I personally feel that I can't do the work of my clients who are cops,
teachers, landscapers, doctors, and manufacturers and therefore they shouldn't
try and do my work. Online forms are only part of the job. Missing is
the advice that you get from the attorney of your choice. As you make
some of life's largest decisions make sure you have the right team
on your side.
